U-treat

The Problem

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem for both small animals and humans, affecting roughly a quarter of all dogs and 50% of women during their lifetimes. They’re also painful and potentially dangerous, making it vital for clinicians to diagnose and treat them as quickly as possible.

The current process for testing at an external laboratory can take up to four days – potentially leaving patients in severe discomfort, unless treated empirically. Empirical prescribing of antibiotics for UTIs is known to contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance. More than 700,000 people die of drug-resistant infections every year, and this figure is expected to reach ten million by 2050 (United nations meeting on antimicrobial resistance, 2016).

The Technology

Test & Treat are committed to improving patient care for those suffering from UTIs by delivering innovative, rapid and reliable diagnostic testing, thereby curbing the rise of antibiotic resistance.

U-treat technology uses the principles of ATP bioluminescence to detect bacterial UTIs within 5 minutes. If a urine sample tests positive for bacteria, a further test can be run which identifies the most effective antibiotic for treatment within a further 30 minutes.
